CHANDIGARH: Like earlier instances, this time too the CCTV camera installed at Sector 38 light-point could not help the police much after a truck ran over a cyclist on Thursday night. The footage failed to capture the truck registration number clearly.
What added to the woes of cops investigating the case was the camera’s skewed installation. A senior cop said, “While examining the footage, we realized that had the CCTV camera been installed properly, we could have easily ascertained the registration number of the truck. Now, we will make sure that it is placed at the right spot.”
The accident involving cyclist Jaipal Kumar is not the only instance where grainy footage stumped cops. In July 2011, a Range Rover of an international athlete had rammed into the car of a Panchkula resident at transport light-point, Sector 26. But it took cops three days to nail the negligence of the SUV driver, as the blur CCTV footage could not be of much help.
Sources in Chandigarh traffic police said, “CCTV cameras installed at different barricades and entry points of Chandigarh do not capture as clear images as those installed at major light-points do.” As many as 50 light-points are equipped with CCTV cameras and most of these help cops in issuing challan slips to traffic offenders. A senior cop said, “We also use CCTV footage as supportive evidence in some of the court cases in which presence of vehicle on the spot needs to be established.”
